Government of Canada Announces Funding for The New Roxy Theatre

Jan 15, 2019

On Tuesday January 15, 2019, Randy Boissonnault, Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre), on behalf of the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced $2.5 million in funding for the Theatre Network Society to re-build the Roxy Theatre on 124 Street in Edmonton.
The $2.5 million investment from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF) will support the construction of a new 14,639 square foot Roxy Theatre. The new facility will include the 200-seat Nancy Power Theatre, the 80-seat Lorne Cardinal Studio, a rehearsal hall, and a gallery in the lobby. It will be a fully accessible facility for audiences and artists.
“Investing in the next generation of artists, performers, playwrights, directors and producers in Western Canada is extremely important to the development and promotion of the Canadian creative economy. By restoring and improving cultural spaces like the Roxy Theatre in Edmonton, it provides a home for creative individuals to practice, flourish and progress.”
—The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage
“The Roxy Theatre is a recognizable landmark in Edmonton and has hosted many notable live performances over the decades. When it was burned down, we all felt a significant loss in the community and hoped that it may one day be restored. The strong desire and support from the Edmonton community to re-build the Roxy Theatre has been enormous and today, this investment from the federal government has made this wish into a reality.”
—Randy Boissonnault, Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre)

This funding will support the $2.5 million provided to the project by the Government of Alberta – which was announced in April of 2018. Theatre Network aims to break ground in the Spring of 2019 with construction taking approximately 18 months.
