Theatre Network Presents World Premiere of “Wonderful Joe” by Governor General-Awarded Ronnie Burkett

Mar 05, 2024

Theatre Network proudly announces the highly anticipated world premiere of Wonderful Joe, a brand new play created and performed by renowned marionette artist Ronnie Burkett. A Must-see, this new work for adults offers a captivating blend of narrative, puppetry, and music by John Alcorn.

Wonderful Joe tells the heartwarming story of Joe and his loyal canine companion, Mister, who embark on a final adventure together after losing their home and facing the prospect of separation. Amidst a seemingly broken world, Joe discovers magic in the ordinary, beauty in the midst of brutality, and companionship in the lost and lonely. Their journey leads them to encounter iconic figures such as Mother Nature, Santa Claus, Jesus, and the Tooth Fairy. Through their encounters, Joe and Mister impart lessons of resilience, imagination, and the transformative power of hope.

Ronnie Burkett, recipient of the prestigious Governor General’s Lifetime Achievement Award just this year, is celebrated as one of Canada’s foremost theatre artists. With a signature style of beautiful puppetry and captivating solo performances, Burkett brings unique and magical stories to life. Since the formation of Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes in 1986, Burkett has garnered acclaim for creating some of the world’s most elaborate and provocative puppetry. His work has stimulated an unprecedented adult audience for puppet theatre, consistently receiving praise on Canada’s major stages and earning invitations as a guest company on numerous international tours abroad.

“We’re thrilled to have Ronnie back at Theatre Network,” says Bradley Moss, Artistic Director of Theatre Network. “He has a long history of premiering his work with our company, dating back to 1990. We are honoured to be a part of that journey with Wonderful Joe.”

Wonderful Joe runs April 4 to 21 at The Roxy Theatre and is sponsored by Chandos Construction. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.theatrenetwork.ca.
