The Book Club (for Plays!)

Thanks to the generous support of the Heart + Soul Fund by EPCOR, we are excited to launch a new online program that turns thespians into bibliophiles. Theatre Network’s Book Club (for plays!) is an online meet-up where audiences join together to discuss Canadian plays with Edmonton’s favourite playwrights.

Theatre Network is pleased to offer this program for free and will provide a hard copy of the play to all participants (while supplies last!).

Donations are encouraged in lieu of tickets.

To register:

1. Fill out the online registration form (Update: Due to a wave of interest, intake for both sessions of CAFÉ DAUGHTER is now closed.)
2. We’ll confirm your registration by email and mail you a hard copy of the play.
3. Read the play!
4. The book club meeting will be hosted on Zoom. We will email the meeting link the day of the event.

#2: Café Daughter by Kenneth T. Williams

Update: Due to a wave of interest, intake for both of CAFÉ DAUGHTER is now closed. 

The one-woman drama inspired by a true story about a Chinese-Cree girl growing up in Saskatchewan in the 1950s and 60s. Charlie Wong emigrated from China to rural Saskatchewan, where he opened a restaurant. But provincial law prevented Charlie from hiring white women to work for him. Katherine, a young Cree woman from a nearby reserve, took a job at the café. In time, the two fell in love, married, and had a daughter—Yvette. Read more.

In 2020, Hunter received an Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for his Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role in a Comedy for his role as Fink in The Society for the Destitute Presents Titus Bouffonius with Theatre Network. When he isn’t acting or welcoming people into ancient worldviews and ways of being, he can be found connecting with his culture or adapting his favourite songs to the mandolin. Read more.
