POSTMODERNISM

Featuring Jai Tanninen and Lesley Marshall

That’s Showbiz, Baby by Jai Tanninen
Every room is a stage for your shine and your shame. We move through the world with the material externalized, forever trying to balance our emotional internalization of it. This collection is an exploration of the way we balance the two, expressed through the work as you move between rooms and the emotions, figures and the objects that populate them.

Illuded by Lesley Marshall
Come on an adventure with simple optical illusions. Using a two-pass risograph paint print, each replication is its own original. Much like anaglyph 3D films and ‘magic eye’ technology, risos were created to be a futuristic technology. Never quite realizing their full potential and having fallen out of fashion they are revived here as artist tools.

Artist Bios

Jai Tanninen

Jai is a contemporary Canadian painter based out of Edmonton. Since he was a child, he had an aptitude for art, drawn in by both the spectacle of creation and the intellectual potential of visual communication. He completed his BFA in 2008 and has shown his work across Canada and abroad. His practice is a continuing development of visual language, using art history, pop culture, lores and music as his syntax.

Lesley Marshall

Motivated by technology, feminism, queer theory and geography, Lesley’s projects juxtapose fragility with the honesty of real life. Desire, longing, satire and femme iconography are found dispersed throughout her often tongue-in-cheek work. An award-winning queer filmmaker appearing in festivals nationally and internationally, music videos by Lesley are featured on Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, Rookie Mag, and Vice. Lesley is the founder of MAVNetwork, focused on hiring inclusive crews working with projects supported by NSI, Telus, StoryHive, BC Arts Council and CBC. Lesley’s projection art has been performed at the NAC, Montreal Jazz Fest, CentrePHI and in galleries in NYC, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and the Netherlands. Lesley screams in the femme punk band Bonnie Doon and is now based in Victoria, BC.
