The Roxy Theatre is coming home!
On Monday June 24 @ 11am alongside Theatre Network’s staff, board, artists, supporters, and donors broke ground on The New Roxy Theatre on 124 Street. We were pleased to announce that our construction partner for the build is Chandos Construction. Construction is expected to take a year for the outside structure and 6-months to complete the interiors. The New Roxy expect to open in early 2021.
The team that put the first shovels in the ground was made up of: MP Randy Boissonnault; The Honourable Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women Leela Aheer; MLA Sarah Hoffman; City Councillor Scott McKeen; Representing the Nancy Power Theatre, Ted Power & Seham Chadi; Representing the Lorne Cardinal Theatre, Lisa Cardinal; Theatre Network Board Member, Paul Manuel; Nextfest Festival Director, Ellen Chorley; Theatre Network Board Member, Paul Manuel; and Theatre Network Artistic & Executive Director Bradley Moss.
The original Roxy Theatre built in 1938, and home to Theatre Network from 1990 – 2015 was a landmark building on Edmonton’s 124 Street. With the support of Canadian Heritage, The Government of Alberta, and The City of Edmonton – Theatre Network is bringing this iconic building back where it belongs.
The New Roxy Capital Campaign is currently in progress and thanks to support from key donors like Seham & Sine Chadi, Ted Power, Nancy Power and the Theatre Network Board of Directors we have a head start on our fundraising goal of $1.5 million. Interested donors can reach Theatre Network at newroxy@theatrenetwork.ca or visit theatrenetwork.ca/the-new-roxy
The New Roxy Theatre will be a true art-house venue designed by Group 2 Architecture Interior Design and featuring two performance spaces and a rehearsal hall to serve community needs. The Nancy Power Theatre is the primary theatre replacing what The Roxy once was as a 200-seat proscenium theatre, The Lorne Cardinal Theatre is a flexible black-box-style theatre with the ability to seat 80 depending on the configuration. The New Roxy will also include a small shop for building sets, two lobby spaces, and the offices of Theatre Network and Nextfest.
