ARTIST STATEMENT
My identity is completely connected to the way I see the land. I’m Woodland Cree, from Little Red River Cree Nation in Treaty 8, and the landscape has always been much more than scenery to me. It carries memory, story, movement and connection. Whether I’m painting the Rockies, the Prairies, the North or the ocean, I’m always trying to capture that feeling of being part of the land rather than simply looking at it.
COAST TO COAST TO COAST is really my love letter to this country and to the incredible variety of landscapes that shape it. We often say ‘coast to coast,’ but Canada has three coasts, and I wanted the exhibition to feel expansive – to move from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic, while also celebrating everything that connects them.
I hope people walk through the exhibition and recognize places they know, discover places they don’t, and maybe see the Canadian landscape a little differently. My work is colourful and joyful, but underneath that is a deep respect for the land and for the stories held within it. More than anything, I hope people leave feeling connected: to a place, to a memory, or simply to this extraordinary country we share
