Theatre Network Presents
A SkirtsAfire/Ruby Slippers Theatre Production
By Alexandra Lainfiesta
Directed by Jenna Rodgers
Set between an unnamed Canadian city, Guatemala, and a surreal game show world, Bella Luz follows Sumailla in a race against time to obtain her permanent residency. Will she be able to shift careers from a dancer to a stuntperson and make it back to Antigua to see her aging Grandmother?
More than a legal status, permanent residency represents her future, her dreams, and the stability of those who depend on her. Rooted in the strength of Latina women and the connections that transcend borders, Bella Luz uses magical realism to blur reality and fantasy, inviting audiences to reflect on belonging, resilience, and what it means to build a home.
Theatre Networks is delighted to work with SkirtsAfire – Edmonton’s only theatre and multidisciplinary arts festival featuring woman-identifying and non-binary artists – to welcome new audiences into our building with the world premiere of Edmonton Playwright Alexandra Lainfiesta’s Bella Luz.
