ACCESSIBLE PERFORMANCES

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK: An E-Town Panto

Supported by the Citadel Theatre’s Heart & Hub program, the accessible performances of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK: An E-Town Panto help make live theatre more inclusive, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone. Through audio description, open captioning, and a relaxed theatre environment, these experiences reduce barriers to participation and allow more audience members to engage with the story in ways that best meet their needs. They create space for people of all abilities, sensory needs, and backgrounds to experience the joy, connection, and magic of live performance together.

SAT DEC 12 at 2:00PM – Audio Described Performance

Provided by Jessy Ardern.

Low Vision seating is available in the first two rows. Please call the Box Office before booking to discuss your seating needs.

Audio Description provides a spoken description of the visual parts of a performance. It is designed for patrons who are Blind or have low vision, as well as anyone who would benefit from hearing a description of what is happening onstage.

During the performance, an Audio Describer describes important visual details, such as characters’ movements, facial expressions, costumes, lighting, and changes to the set. Patrons can listen to the description through personal headphones connected to a small radio receiver.

Radio receivers and headphones are available at the Access Table in the lobby. To borrow a receiver, you must leave a government-issued photo ID as a deposit. Please visit the Access Table before the performance to pick up your equipment and return the receiver after the show. Your ID will be returned when you return the receiver.

TUE DEC 15 at 7:30PM – Open Captioned Performance

Provided by Jeffrey Weigl of WizCap.

An open-captioned performance features real-time captions that display spoken dialogue, song lyrics, and other significant audio elements throughout the show. The captions appear on screens positioned near the stage and visible to all audience members, allowing everyone to access the text without needing a separate device or individual accommodation.

Live captioning supports a more inclusive and accessible theatre experience for Deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members, people with auditory processing disorders, those who are not fluent in English, and anyone who benefits from visual reinforcement of spoken language.

By providing visual access to dialogue, lyrics, and other relevant audio cues, captions help audiences follow the plot, understand character interactions, appreciate the music, and engage more fully with the story as it unfolds. Because the captions are integrated into the shared theatre environment, open captioning allows audience members to experience the performance together.

SAT DEC 19 at 2:00PM – Relaxed & Family Friendly Experience

Audited by Kristi Hansen.

Relaxed Experiences offer a welcoming, accessible theatre environment for audience members who may benefit from a more relaxed setting or who may not otherwise feel comfortable attending a live performance. This may include people with sensory sensitivities, autism, learning disabilities, or dementia; families with babies or young children; and anyone who may need to move around or leave the theatre during the performance.

We use the term Relaxed Experience rather than Relaxed Performance because we are not always able to make all the production adjustments recommended for a traditional Relaxed Performance. For example, live orchestral music may make it difficult to keep sound levels below 80 decibels, and pantomime often includes performers interacting directly with the audience.

Sensory kits, including sunglasses, fidget toys, earplugs, and earmuffs will be available at the Access Table. A government-issued ID is required as a deposit and will be returned when the kit is brought back after the performance.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT:
    • These are “no-shushing” performances. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the show in a way that feels comfortable for them.
    • A relaxed environment: The theatre will be dimly lit rather than completely dark, with a flexible approach to audience movement and noise.
    • Reduced capacity: Fewer tickets will be sold to allow for additional space and the option to change seats when available.
    • Production introduction: Kristi Hansen, Relaxed Experience auditor and Access Coordination, will introduce the characters and preview selected staging and design elements.
    • Quiet space: A designated area will be available for anyone needing a break.

Please consult the Visual Guide, available one week before the performance, for more details on what to expect.
