What happens when you lose your home? You rediscover it.

Our first year at The Roxy on Gateway brought a newfound momentum that led to an upbeat and exciting season with a total of 25 Sterling nominations from both our Mainstage and Roxy Performance Series shows. We’re proud to have provided space for the independent theatre community of Edmonton, and are especially proud of Dave Horak’s Edmonton Actors Theatre, and their multi Sterling award-winning production of Burning Bluebeard. Thanks to the support we have received from the community, we are going into our 2016/2017 Season with confidence, and we’re eager to share it with the theatre lovers of Edmonton.

“This is a risky season with two world premieres and three local playwrights.” Says artistic director Bradley Moss. “It gets me excited when we focus on new Western Canadian stories.”

Our 42nd Mainstage Season is all about finding a place to call your own. To kick off the season we go back to The Wild Rose Trailer Court with the return of Darrin Hagen’s salute to trailer court women in Tornado Magnet – which will mark Darrin’s return to the role of Dotty in this anniversary production. Then to ring in 2017, we present the World Premiere of Matthew MacKenzie’s darkly funny play Bust, which tells the story of two Fort McMurray couples in the midst of a crashing economy, and the frenzy of panic and fear they find themselves in after one controversial call at their sons’ hockey game. In the spring, we follow two Mennonite sisters living in Mexico, as they blaze their own trail to create a life that’s full of art, beauty and love in Chris Craddock’s World Premiere of Irma Voth – an adaptation of the Miriam Toews novel. The season culminates in the 11-day celebration, Nextfest 2017, an emerging artist festival from The Nextfest Arts Company featuring multidisciplinary performances by some of Canada’s brightest new talents.

It is important for us to support Edmonton’s independent theatre scene, and we continue to do just that with our Roxy Performance Series. The series begins in October, with Anne Washburn’s 10 out of 12, presented by Jim Guedo’s Wild Side Productions. In December, we are thrilled to continue our new holiday tradition of presenting Jay Torrence’s Burning Bluebeard, the Sterling award-winning play produced by Dave Horak’s Edmonton Actors Theatre. The Believers, written by Byrony Lavery, will take the stage in March, presented by Nancy McAlear’s MadFandango Theatre Collective. As always, we are thrilled to host another season of Hey Ladies!, the info-tainment extravaganza, that will return on select Friday nights.

Theatre Network has a long history of presenting new works from local and Canadian writers and the entire team is excited to be dipping into Edmonton’s rich collection of artists to bring audiences an exciting locally crafted season at The Roxy on Gateway.
